Immediate Relief To Flood Affected Victims In West Bengal 2015

The excessive rain during the past few days coupled with high tide and water released from Jharkhand and Odisha has rendered the flood situation in West Bengal. A total of 3.69 million people across 9,691 villages of 210 blocks in 12 districts in West Bengal have been displaced due to the floods. Nearly two lakh houses have got destroyed, rendering about a lakh of people homeless. Till Now 69 deaths have been reported from various parts of the state during the floods, owing to lightning, wall collapse, electrocution, snake bite and drowning.

The depression over the north-eastern waters of Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh is providing excessive rainfall to the region. The southern part of West Bengal, i.e., the Gangetic Plains have been receiving very heavy showers triggered by to this depression. As much as 80% area of Howrah, Hooghly, Burdwan, Bankura, Birbhum, Murshidabad, districts is currently being affected by floods. Midnapore, Nadia, and 24 Parganas districts are also at the risk of getting flooded. Roads and lands remain submerged with rivers swelling up in most parts of the state. Even 2.1 lakh hectare of agricultural land has been severely affected due to the consistent rainfall. According to reports from the disaster management department, 47 municipalities across the state are already suffering greatly due to the calamitic conditions. The situation is very grim and unless immediate assistance is extended, it will be difficult for people to get back to their normal lives.

The village Marokhana of Khanakul block, Hooghly district is very much affected by flood. There is a school providing pre primary and primary education to children in that village. The assessment team has found that the school, which is about 14 feet high, has gone completely under the flood waters and country boats are being ferried over the school building. With 8-15 feet of water submerging almost all the village, people are in perennial trouble to save themselves, let alone their property and assets. The total population of that area is 279358, including 252 and 1260 of our direct and indirect beneficiaries respectively.

In village Parbakshi of Amta II block, Howrah District there is also a pre primary, primary and middle school. The school has 314 students and 1570 of our indirect beneficiaries. With a population of 279358, the villagers out there are even facing tremendous insecurity and uncertainties.

The villagers of Laxmikantapur of Bishnupur I block, South 24 Pgs District and Bishnupur of Rampurhat II block, Birbhum District are also in trouble and need to be provided with relief services as soon as possible.

As a humanitarian organization Asha Bhavan Centre has extended its hand to provide relief to the direct and indirect beneficiaries affected by floods and have already provided immediate relief to 5000 direct beneficiaries and 25,000 indirect beneficiaries.
